Description
Split face block has a rough, uneven texture with exposed aggregate that can be used to create eye pleasing results in masonry building. Split face blocks begin as two or more precision units molded together and, after a curing period, are placed in a splitting machine. Blades in the machine exert pressure simultaneously on the top, bottom, and sometimes, the sides of the joined units. This literally fractures them apart.
By the very nature of its manufacture, the split face texture varies in terms of degree of aggregate exposure and surface projections and depressions. In scored split units, particularly the small score, vertical alignment and exposure of the score may be subject to variation.
Sizes of split units are expressed in terms of nominal dimensions and compensate for a standard 3/8 inch mortar joint. That is, an 8 x 8 x 16 is actually 7 5/8 x 7 5/8 x 15 5/8 inches, with a permissible variation in overall dimensions (width, height, length) of ± 1/8 inch.
Standards
